On Wednesdays in October, Wayland Main Street will offer a hands-on workshop series for Wayland area businesses focused on inexpensive, effective marketing for small businesses at the Wayland Union High School computer lab (870 E. Superior Street) from 7:00PM – 8:30PM.
Surveys completed by business owners as part of Wayland’s 2012 Market Analysis and Business Development Study revealed that 75% of busiensses would like help with and plan to improve their marketing efforts. To respond to this need, Wayland Main street will be offering this workshop for all Wayland area businesses. The Wayland Economic Restructuring Committee (WERC) has invited Nicole Sunstrum, Social Engagement Coordinator for the State of Michigan to present.
Nicole Sunstrum has over three years experience coordinating statewide public sector social media initiatives. In her current capacity she is responsible for coordinating a unified presence and strategy externally among 5+ million constituents for government entities and internally for over 46,000 employees. Her role includes policy creation; consultation and training aimed at ensuring added value to all Michigan citizens. Nicole also serves as content and community manger for state enterprise wide platforms, ranked as the third largest in the nation.
Nicole possesses a Bachelor of Science degree from Grand Valley State University and a Master’s degree from Aquinas College. She is a Certified Teacher and is actively involved in her community where she chairs the Promotions and Marketing Committee and resides on the Michigan Main Street and Downtown Development Authority Boards. She is currently running for Portland City Council.

Wednesday, October 2 – Social Media 101: Getting Started: Everyone’s doing it, and it shows no signs of going away. Are you interested in riding the Social Media wave, but not sure where to even start?Join us for an introduction into the fundamentals of Social Media. This seminar is for entrepreneurs, business owners, and independent consultants who are thinking of adding social media to their marketing toolbox. Like Social Media, come prepared to engage in a fast paced and interactive conversation.
Wednesday, October 9 – Social Media for Business: Making Engagement Work For You: Have you attempted to use Internet marketing and Social Media for your small business, but wonder if you are doing it correctly? Are you unsure how to maximize your efforts or determine your return? This session will discuss innovative and appropriate use of Social Media, what it takes to nurture a successful social media presence, what works and what doesn’t, and how to maximize your time and investment in Social Media.
Wednesday, October 16 – Do I need to pay for that? Social Media Best Practices and Biggest Losers: Think you could be the next “Dunk in the Dark?” or afraid of being the next Chrysler scandal? Find out who’s doing it best, and what they’re doing that makes them stand out from the crowd. Learn what not to do to keep your fans coming back and protect your business reputation. You’ll hear about engaging social business practices that produce results, horror stories of social media gone wrong, online brand management, and how to effectively interact with online consumers and build advocates.
Wednesday, October 23 – Diversifying Content: Where do I belong in Social?: Everything but the kitchen sink! New networks; new content. Bring your questions, existing online presences, idevices or notebooks. This session will circle around demonstrating development, predicting trends, and anything else the group desires. This final session is for advanced and experienced users, or anyone who has attended all three prior sessions.
This workshop is open to all Wayland area businesses. Cost is $10 per session or $30 for all four sessions.
